CABEI and Bettergy promote Energy Efficiency in Latam

In an effort to promote sustainability and improve energy efficiency in Costa Rica, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has partnered with Bettergy to develop and identify innovative projects that transform energy management in the country. Using advanced digital tools, based on the EnergySequence platform, this collaboration highlights how the combination of technology and strategic financing can generate significant impact in key sectors of the economy.

In Costa Rica, the growing interest in sustainability has led to the need to identify and promote bankable energy efficiency projects. The objective is to address this need in three main market segments: the public sector, the non-sovereign public sector and the private sector, focusing on medium and large enterprises. Each segment presented unique opportunities and specific challenges in the transition to more efficient and sustainable energy practices.

Solutions Identified:

Public Sector

  1. Hybridisation of Combustion Boiler to Heat Pump with Photovoltaic System: This measure not only offers a comparable investment to conventional technology, but also significantly improves operational and energy efficiency.
  2. Lighting Replacement with LED Technology with Energy Storage: With an investment of between 770 and 900 USD/kW installed, this technology has a significantly improved efficiency compared to traditional fluorescent tubes.

Non-Sovereign Public Sector

  1. Renovation of Air Conditioning Installations: Maintains similar costs to conventional technology, but with superior operational and energy efficiency.
  2. Maximum Demand Control and Smart Strips: Including energy storage and the possibility of hybridisation with wind installations, this measure improves energy efficiency and demand control.

Private Sector

  1. Deployment of District Cooling/Heating in Free Zones: Offers significant improvements in energy efficiency and lifetime with a slightly higher investment than decentralised systems.
  2. Upgrading Induction Motors and Variable Frequency Drives in Industries: With an investment comparable to conventional technology, this measure improves operational efficiency.
  3. Hybridisation of Photovoltaic/Wind Systems and Air Conditioning Renovation in the Tertiary Sector: Combining renewable energy generation with improvements in air conditioning systems, this measure increases operational and energy efficiency.

Bettergy plays a crucial role in this project through its Energy Efficiency expertise and digitalisation capabilities, developing customised tools for financial institutions and other channels. These tools enable efficient management and informed decision making to maximise energy savings and reduce carbon emissions.

The collaboration between CABEI and Bettergy has resulted in the identification of advanced technologies that, once implemented, will significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. This project demonstrates how the combination of strategic financing and innovative technological solutions can transform sectors and promote more sustainable development.

CABEI and Bettergy demonstrate that through collaboration and the development of innovative projects, it is possible to achieve a positive impact on sustainability and energy efficiency. This success story serves as a model for future projects in the region, underlining the importance of technological solutions and strategic financing in promoting sustainable practices.
